General, my thoughts

“O You who believe!”

Muslims all over the globe have engaged themselves in observing Ramadan, the holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, and fasting in this month is one of the five pillars of Islam.

As a ritual, fasting is a symbolic act and the essence of it is Taqwa, as in Quran, the goal of fasting is summoned as,

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may attain taqwa.”

Taqwa has a paramount value in Quran. It is the proper attitude of devotion to Allah’s boundless wisdom and majesty;and fear of committing wrong deeds while pursuing the good. So, the month of Ramadan is not about deprivation and bodily exertion. It helps us to build our moral discipline. It also reminds us of the plight of those who are in constant hunger and deprivation;this is,in fact, the basic idea of fasting. Most of us complaint about having tough time fasting and staying hungry all day long along with physical exertion. While, according to a prominent scholar,’what fast is a true fast if it is not felt. You’re not fulfilling the basic aim of fasting unless you realize the hunger and thirst of those who are needy and deprived.

Thus, we must assess ourselves during this month and make sincere efforts to experience the true spirit of fasting.Performing prayers with sincerity, helping and feeding the needy, giving charity would not take much but lift our spiritual and moral values;and is a greater source of gaining Allah’s pleasure.

May Allah help us following the true path and become better this Ramadan than before.Aameen!
