Jannat-al-Baqi,History and Day of Demolition

Al-Baqi is a cemetery in Medina, Saudi Arabia, located to the southeast of the Masjid-al-Nabwi.

Literally “Al-Baqi” means a tree garden. It is also known as “Jannat al-Baqi” due to its sanctity, since in it are buried many of our Prophet’s(P.B.U.H.) relatives and companions.

Over the centuries, Al-Baqi remained a sacred site with renovations being carried out as and when needed till the Wahabis rose to power in the early nineteenth century. The latter desecrated the tombs and demonstrated disrespect to the martyrs and the companions of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) buried there. Muslims who disagreed with them were branded as “infidels” and were subsequently killed.

On 8th Shawaal, 1345 Hijra (August 1925) the then Saudi rulers bulldozed the holy places in Jannatul Baqee and Jannatul Mualla in Makkah Muazzama and Madina Munawwarah (the centres of the Islamic World) where holy graves of Holy Prophet’s elders, Aal-e-Athaar (A.S.), Azwaaj-e-Rasool (SAW), Sahaba Kubaar (R.A.) and Tabaeen (R.A.) were situated.

In 1925 AD Jannat al-Mu’alla, the sacred cemetery at Makkah was destroyed alongwith the house where the Holy Prophet (s) was born. Since then, this day is a day of mourning for all Muslims.

Is it not strange that the Wahhabis find it offensive to have the tombs, shrines and other places of importance preserved, while the remains of their Saudi kings are being guarded at the expense of millions of dollars?

Protest from Indian Muslims

In 1926, protest gatherings were held by shocked Muslims all over the world. Resolutions were passed and a statement outlining the crimes perpetrated by Wahhabis was issued and included the following:

  1. The destruction and desecration of the holy places i.e. the birth place of the Holy Prophet [s], the graves of Banu Hashim in Makkah and in Jannat al-Baqi (Madinah), the refusal of the Wahhabis to allow Muslims to recite Ziyarah or Surah al-Fatiha at those graves.

  2. The destruction of the places of worship i.e. Masjid Hamza, Masjid Abu Rasheed, in addition to the tombs of Imams and Sahaba (Prophet’s companions).

  3. Interference in the performance of Hajj rituals.

  4. Forcing the Muslims to follow the Wahhabis innovations and to abandon their own ways according to the guidance of the Imams they follow.

  5. The massacre of sayyids in Taif, Madina, Ahsa, and Qatif.

  6. The demolition of the grave of the Imams at al-Baqi which deeply offended and grieved all Shias.

Protest from other countries

Similar protests were lodged by Muslims in Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Indonesia, and Turkey. All of them condemn the Saudi Wahhabis for their barbaric acts. Some scholars wrote tracts and books to tell the world the fact that what was happening in Hijaz was actually a conspiracy plotted by the Jews against Islam, under the guise of Tawheed. The idea was to eradicate the Islamic legacy and heritage and to systematically remove all its vestiges so that in the days to come, Muslims will have no affiliation with their religious history.

A partial list of the demolished graves and shrines

Al-Mualla graveyard in Makkah which includes the grave of Sayyida Khadija bint Khuwailid (s.a), wife of the Prophet (s), the grave of Amina bint Wahab, mother of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.), the grave of Abu Talib, father of Imam Ali (a), and the grave of Abdul Muttalib, grandfather of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.)

  • The grave of Bibi Hawa in Jeddah.

  • The grave of the father of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.) in Madina.

  • The house of sorrows (bayt al-Ahzan) of Sayeda Fatima (a.s.) in Madina.

  • The Salman al-Farsi mosque in Madina.

  • The Raj’at ash-Shams mosque in Madina.

  • The house of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.) in Madina, where he lived after migrating from Makkah.

  • The house of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a.s.) in Madina.

  • The complex (mahhalla) of Banu Hashim in Madina.

  • The house of Imam Ali (a.s.) where Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Hussain (a.s.) were born.

  • The house of Hazrat Hamza and the graves of the martyrs of Uhud (a.s.)

All Muslims term it their Imani obligation to observe “Youm-e-Inhidaam e Jannat ul Baqee” on 8th Shawwal every year so as to attract the attention of so-called champions of human rights, self-styled Khademain Harmain Sharifain Aal-e-Saud, Muslim heads of State, representative body of the Islamic World OIC, Arab League, claimants of respecting the rights of the world nations United Nations. They strongly demand that restoration of the honour of Jannatul Baqee and Jannatul Mualla were a prerequisite so as to achieve success in getting independence for the oppressed nations, solution of Kashmir and Palestine issues in the light of United Nations Resolutions, reconstruction of Babri Masjid and other mosques, providing protection and restoration of honour and respect to the place of worship belonging to all minorities.

Making it clear that it is not an issue belonging only to Maktab-e-Jafariya(A.S.) rather that of the whole world of humanity in general, and the whole Islamic World in particular.

The Chief of Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Fiqah Jafariya Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi has called upon the Muslim Ummah to ensure early reconstruction of the holy shrines if it desires to restore its supremacy in the world and root out problems and difficulties faced by it as it is the only way to annex Al-Quds Al-Sharif and get independence of Palestine and Azad Kashmir. For this purpose,Muslims should hold protest on 8th Shawwal to condemn the demolition of Janaat-ul-Baqee.

Destruction of sacred sites in Hijaz by the Saudi Wahhabis continues even today.According to some scholars what is happening in Hijaz is actually a conspiracy plotted by the Jews against Islam, under the guise of Tawheed. The idea is to eradicate the Islamic legacy and heritage and to systematically remove all its vestiges so that in the days to come, Muslims will have no affiliation with their religious history.

  1. Hello Anam,

I would not like to take anyone’s side, as the Saudi rulers have done good and bad things both. But what I would like to say, you must listen with a clear mind.

How long do you wish to entangle yourselves into issue such as graveyards? The Prophet’s companions do not need our petty graveyards, Allah has given them positions in Jannah that no one can ever get or attain. They are in a much better place than this world.

The house of Imam Ali (A.S) or Imam Hussain (A.S) is NOT in this filthy world. Its some place where you and I can only dream to go.

Creating difference amongst ourselves just because they eradicated graveyards is not the way to Muslims to go. What you should be propagating and what Muslims be Shia aur Sunni need to learn is the way forward.

We are hundreds of years behind the western nations. We need to move forward in science, in technology, in philosophy.

    1. Okay, agreeing to your opinion that the prophet’s family and companions do not need our ‘petty graveyards’,they have surely been granted better place in Jannah. With that I’d like to comment, then shouldn’t we stop making graves of those shuhuda as well, who fight for the nation or get martyred in masjids or for no reason. They get ‘shahadat’ so ultimately they reserve a grand place in Allah’s Jannat. No? Why should we bother making graveyards for them since they also do not need our petty graveyards, just remember them in our prayers. No?

You said you are not favoring any one, don’t you support the independence of Kashmir and Palestine? Should Muslims stop condemning the brutality they have been facing and look forward to competing with the world,as you said we are far behind the West?
You raise voice for blasphemy against the Prophet(P.B.U.H.), demolishing their sacred graves is not a desecration of Prophet’s family, and his companions??

It’s not just about creating differences among Shia and Sunnis, it’s a part of bigger conspiracy they have been doing since ages.I hope you have the knowledge about the existence of Wahabism.

      1. in the name of Allah who is the best benefits provider and he is the one whom we pray and he is the one who sent all those messengers with the message of tauheed. coming to the points, we have to understand that as the time passes we are witnessing ‘bida’t’ many Mazars (tombs) in Pakistan/ India are used for wrong meanings. we see bida’at our selves in Karachi but we can not stop these people now, as in individual I can only dislike these acts, no Sahaba/ Tabaeeen/ taba tabaeen would like you to go to their grave and ask them for mercy and cry like babies, but they will feel proud to see you for giving them Gifts of Ayats and Sawabs which ultimately increase their points more and more – the same way Allah ‘s Rasool Muhammad Mustafa Salle Allah Alleh Waali Waslam tought you to pray and Durood-e-Ibrahimi is one dua as well – same dua you ask after Azan (call) this way the Rutba is increasing every second every micro second . this is the way we have been asked to do – this is the correct way – do not take your mind here and there please. I am talking generic way. please understand for the sake of behurmatti of place – it is better to remove the place if you cant stop the people – till today you see there are gaurds at Roza Paak and they hash all the time by standing there – its ok that we get emotional and we should get emotional ( why not) its is not possible if I touch the Jaali of my Aaqa ‘s roza paak and not cry, its not possible at all – but there are many of us they start doing be hurmati – I feel that its only Makka and Madina where you want to go where I want to go, I some time feel visiting each and every place – but we need to understand that bigger action do always scarry a bigger reason my brothers – please remember what you are told to remember and don’t get into some thing which creates distance and FITNA amongst you – Thank you so much for time – may Allah bless us all. Aslama O Alakum

  2. this is what IBLEES wants so that you start killing each other – get division under the flag of your FIRQA. you take your self to a stage where you are actually asking a death penalty for a muslim just because you think he is wrong – no such rule has been Allowed by Allah Tallah – Apology – disagreeing your point – when Dajal will call people – there will be few who will listen to him and few will not – but you call both of those groups as Wahabis 🙂 we all are muslims and we are good to be muslims only including those two groups of Muslims.
Brother you have create love for all in a generic muslim way –
May Allah bless you and me both AAameen

    1. Brother, you have very well explained your point and all I can get from your thoughts is that there’s no harm in ‘destroying’ the holy places to avoid ‘biddat’, and so, if one day, God forbid, it comes to demolition of the grave of Prophet (P.B.U.H.), you’ll have no reasons to protest. I am sorry, but your point of view depicts the Wahabbi mindset only which we have been against of. It’s about the sanctity of Prophet’s family, for God’s sake!
